"latest video"

 

Over the last few weeks I have been covering the 2011 Rugby World Cup for the New Zealand Herald. Most of my work has been of training sessions and press conferences so not very exciting. This video however was a bit more fun to shoot, Irish and Welsh rugby fans talking up their teams chances in their Quarter Final at the Wellington Regional Stadium. Video was shot on the Canon XF100.

My move into video has proved to be a very successful one. More and more of my clients are seeing the benefits of having informative or instructional videos on their site, and they have learned it’s a great way to communicate in a personal way with their clients.  

Photography is still a major part of my business but it is a bonus to my clients for me to have the skills to supply both photos and video.

Over the last 18 months there have been massive, some say ground breaking, changes in the photojournalist industry as the new breed of digital cameras have included the ability to shoot high definition video. The Canon EOS 5D MkII set the industry alight with its high quality video, so much so that longtime filmmakers became huge fans of the HDSLR.

 

I use the Canon EOS 5D MkII, Canon EOS 1D MkIV and the Canon EOS 60D all of which shoot high definition video. Being able to use my kit of lenses (from 16mm to 500mm lens) to shoot video has opened up a whole new world of possibilities. And the quality is amazing.

I am equipped with two wireless microphone kits, various handheld microphones, lighting and the software, Final Cut Studio 3, to produce videos for publishing to your site or on DVD.

 

In February 2008 I attended the Platypus Workshop in the USA. This course is run by two icons of American photojournalism PF Bentley and Dirck Halstead, both of whom made video part of their lives some years ago. The workshop is intended for freelance and newspaper photographers to learn how to shoot, edit and produce videos good enough for broadcast on television.

 

Here's a run down on the course I attended in New Orleans.

Audio slideshows are another way of presenting your message. They are a mix of still images and audio, another ideal way to present your companys history for example.
